In 2014 Carlos Moedas became the 5th Portuguese National to be appointed as European Commissioner since Portugal joined the EU in 1986. He ran a €77billion Science and Innovation program across the European Union. He was previously the Secretary of State to the Prime-Minister of Portugal and an elected Member of the Portuguese Parliament. In 2020 he joined the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation as a Trustee. In March 2021 he decided to run for Mayor of Lisbon. On the 26 of September 2021 he was elected Mayor of Lisbon.
